The Rev. Canon Scott Gunn

Christ Church, Glendale

Nominee for Clergy Deputy to the 81st General Convention
Please describe your participation in the life of your congregation, the diocese, and the larger community

My “day job” is at Forward Movement (publishers of Forward Day by Day), where I have served as Executive Director since 2011. On Sundays, I serve as priest associate at Christ Church Glendale, where it is my delight to preach, celebrate the sacraments, and teach. Over the years, I’ve held a number of positions in our diocese, including service on the Commission on Ministry and as an Examining Chaplain. More recently, I have served on the Standing Committee, including some time as its president. I’ve served as a Deputy to General Convention, having been elected by this diocese for the conventions of 2022, 2018, and 2015. Most important, in all these roles, I have worked to bring the Good News of God in Jesus Christ to a world yearning for hope, purpose, and meaning. There is much to celebrate in our churches, and we also have more work to do and ministry to offer.

Why do you feel God is calling you to serve in this position?

I have enjoyed ministry at the churchwide level. Each time I have been a Deputy to General Convention, I have learned many things. I have also tried to bring my perspective as an Episcopalian in Southern Ohio to my work at General Convention. God has given me the gift of being a “church geek” and this is one of the best ways to live out that vocation. Not only do I find it helpful to take part in the work of General Convention at convention, but I have also blogged and shared prolifically on social media each time — hoping to make connections between churchwide work and our local ministries. It would be my honor and delight to serve once again as a Deputy to General Convention from Southern Ohio.
