R-84-17: A resolution in support of Appalachian Peoples Service Organization (APSO) 150 150 Diocese of Southern Ohio Annual Convention

Whereas, Appalachian Peoples Service Organization (APSO) represents the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church in the Appalachian region; and

Whereas, APSO is the agency of the Episcopal Church working closely and effectively with seventeen other denominations in ecumenical ministry in Appalachia; and

Whereas, APSO has been a principal resource in developing grassroots self-help in an area devastated by unemployment and exploitation; and

Whereas, APSO is faced with decreasing support from the Executive Council support budget while Appalachian dioceses and other denominations are continuing to increase their commitment and support of this vital ministry;

Be it therefore resolved, that this Convention of the Diocese of Southern Ohio requests the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and Program, Budget and Finance Committee of the 68th General Convention, meeting in Anaheim, California, that APSO’s work and ministry be recognized and affirmed as an important expression of our domestic mission responsibility, and as an arm of the wider Episcopal Church in partnership with the Appalachian dioceses, by a special and specific designation from the General Budget of the Episcopal Church for an amount of $85,000 per year for the Triennium 1986-1988.
